The Impact of COVID-19 on Education: A Global Perspective

The president of the American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten, attributed the drop in math scores on the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) to the COVID-19 pandemic, despite her previous opposition to in-person learning. Weingarten had fought against reopening schools during the pandemic but now acknowledges the negative impact of remote learning on student performance. US math scores on the PISA exam fell by 13 points between 2018 and 2022. The National Education Association emphasized the need for increased investment in American education but did not directly mention the pandemic's influence on the results.

Education Crisis: US Students' Math and Reading Skills Plummet to Record Lows

Tenth-grade students in the US achieved their lowest-ever math scores on the international Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) test, with an average score of 465 out of 1,000. The scores dropped by 13 points compared to 2018 and were 18 points lower than in 2003. The US students were outperformed by students in 33 other countries, with Asian countries leading the rankings. The results highlight a global concern in math achievement, and despite improvements in reading and science, more investment is needed in American education.

"Unprecedented Decline: U.S. Education Standing Among Peer Nations in Jeopardy"

The recent release of the 2022 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results shows that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on education systems worldwide. While the OECD as a whole saw declines in math and reading scores, the United States fared better than many of its peers, with a decline of 11 percent in math but no statistically significant change in reading or science. This resilience can be attributed to the unprecedented federal investment of $122 billion in K-12 schools, which allowed for academic recovery, health and safety measures, and mental health support. The funding was allocated based on Title I rules, with low-income schools receiving more per-student funding. The U.S. has implemented evidence-backed interventions such as high-dosage tutoring, afterschool programs, and summer programming to aid in academic recovery. While there is still room for improvement, the federal investment and leadership have helped bolster the U.S. education system amidst the challenges of the pandemic.
