Texas Republicans defend Trump amid federal indictment

Texas Republicans continue to stand by former President Donald Trump after a 37-count federal indictment accused him of lying to federal investigators as part of a scheme to keep classified documents in his possession. The indictment is Trump’s second after a New York grand jury charged him over his role in allegedly paying hush money to porn actress Stormy Daniels to cover up an affair. Several Texas Republicans dismissed the charges as a partisan ploy and echoed Trump’s claims of a witch hunt, while Texas Democrats insisted Trump be tried for alleged crimes like any other American.

Pro-Ukraine fighters shell Russian town near Ukraine border.

Anti-Putin partisans shelled the Russian town of Shebekino, just over four miles from the Ukrainian border, while Russia hit Kyiv in an early morning high-speed missile attack, leaving three dead and 11 injured. The war has shifted towards fresh attacks on civilian centres ahead of a widely anticipated Ukrainian counteroffensive. Western sources said munitions, stocks, and troops trained in close combat and fast infantry manoeuvre are close to being in place at assembly points, allowing Ukraine to launch its counteroffensive within weeks.

Police Chief Killed in Partisan Attack in Russian-Occupied Melitopol

Oleksandr Mishchenko, a police chief in the occupied Ukrainian city of Melitopol who defected to Russia after they seized the city, has been killed in an apparent partisan bombing. The explosion happened at the entrance to the block where he lived, injuring two policemen and hospitalizing them. The exiled mayor of Melitopol called the dead officer a traitor, and there have been reports of heightened Ukrainian partisan activity in the region. Melitopol is the largest city on territory occupied by Russia since February 2022.
