Alarming Increase in Toxic Algae Blooms Threatens Lakes Nationwide

Toxic blue-green algae blooms have led to the closure of two East Bay lakes, Lake Temescal and Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area, and caution advisories have been issued for Del Valle Regional Park and Lake Chabot. The East Bay Regional Parks District has warned visitors about the dangerous levels of toxic algae, which can cause health issues such as headaches, skin irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. The algae blooms are more prevalent in hot weather and stagnant water, and the park officials have advised people to avoid contact with the algae and prevent pets from drinking contaminated water.
