Researchers from the Complexity Science Hub and the Centro Ricerche Enrico Fermi (CREF) have developed a new classification method for chess openings based on similarities observed in 3,746,135 chess games played by 18,253 players on the online platform Lichess. The method identified ten clusters of chess openings that represent different styles of play, which can complement the standard classification. The researchers also determined the difficulty of opening games and the fitness of players using their method.
