Spanning nine days in Northern Italy, the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics feature 79 medal events across six sports—Para Alpine skiing, Para biathlon, Para cross-country skiing, Para snowboarding, sled hockey and wheelchair curling—each governed by sport-specific classifications and, in many cases, factored times to level the playing field.
Researchers from the Complexity Science Hub and the Centro Ricerche Enrico Fermi (CREF) have developed a new classification method for chess openings based on similarities observed in 3,746,135 chess games played by 18,253 players on the online platform Lichess. The method identified ten clusters of chess openings that represent different styles of play, which can complement the standard classification. The researchers also determined the difficulty of opening games and the fitness of players using their method.
