Search Continues for Missing Boater off North Carolina Coast

Expert fisherman Jeffrey Kale has been missing for nearly a week after his boat was found drifting off the North Carolina coast, prompting the Coast Guard to call off a second round of searches. Despite extensive efforts by rescue crews and good Samaritans, there has been no sign of Kale, and authorities fear the worst. The 47-year-old was last seen leaving the Southport Wildlife Boat Ramp, and his empty boat was discovered 83 miles off the coast of Wrightsville Beach. Cmdr. Corrie Sergent expressed condolences to the Kale family and acknowledged the difficulty of suspending the search, while noting the assistance received from various sources.

Tracking Hurricane Tammy: Impacts and Uncertainty Along the Atlantic Coast

Hurricane Tammy is forecasted to move towards the North Carolina coast by the weekend, potentially bringing rough surf conditions. The storm is currently located south-southeast of Bermuda with winds of 75 mph. It is expected to remain at hurricane strength through Tuesday and Wednesday before weakening to a tropical storm on Thursday. While the storm is predicted to weaken and not have significant impacts on land, the Wilmington area may experience maritime impacts, including increased risk for rip currents along the coast. No watches or warnings are currently in effect.

Over the long holiday weekend, the North Carolina coast saw an average of almost 100 people per day being rescued from rip currents, with a total of 88 water rescues on Saturday and 124 on Sunday. Carolina Beach had the highest number of rescues, followed by Wrightsville Beach and Kure Beach. On Monday, the risk for rip currents rose to high along a stretch of beach between Atlantic Beach and Ocracoke, resulting in 90 rescues. Authorities urge beachgoers to swim at lifeguard-protected beaches, never swim alone, and follow safety instructions to avoid becoming a victim of rip currents.
