Rising Deaths: Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Surpasses Melanoma

Non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are now responsible for more deaths worldwide than melanoma due to their higher prevalence. In 2020, there were nearly 1.2 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer compared to 324,635 cases of melanoma. Although non-melanoma skin cancers are less deadly than melanomas, their high incidence rates contribute to a higher number of deaths. Factors such as the aging population and depletion of the ozone layer contribute to the increasing rates. Increasing awareness campaigns and regular dermatologist check-ups are recommended for early detection and prevention. Treatment options include excision, Mohs surgery, curettage and electrodesiccation, cryosurgery, and topical creams.

Rising Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Deaths: Warning Signs to Look Out For

Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC), such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are now responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths, surpassing melanoma, according to a study by European dermatologists. NMSC accounted for over three-quarters of all skin cancer cases in 2020 and led to nearly 64,000 deaths, while melanoma caused about 57,000 deaths. The study also revealed that NMSC is often underreported, suggesting that the true impact of the disease may be even higher. It is important to be aware of the signs of skin cancer, as early detection and treatment are crucial. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US, and everyone, regardless of skin tone, should take precautions to protect themselves from the sun's harmful UV rays.
