"Supreme Court Allows Lawsuit Over No Fly List to Proceed Against Government"

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a man's challenge to his placement on the No Fly List can proceed, rejecting the government's claim that the lawsuit was moot after removing him from the list. Yonas Fikre, a U.S. citizen, alleged his placement was unlawful and sued the FBI. The Court's decision allows Fikre's case to move forward, despite government concerns about disclosing classified information, and clarifies that the government does not necessarily have to reveal sensitive information to show a case is moot.

Proposed no-fly list for disruptive passengers to be reviewed by Congress.

U.S. Senate and House members proposed a new no-fly list for unruly passengers that would let the Transportation Security Administration ban people convicted or fined for assaulting or interfering with airline crew members. The legislation would be separate from the current FBI-run no-fly list. Civil libertarians vowed to oppose the measure, saying the FBI no-fly list is not transparent and unfairly targets people of color, and that the new list would have the same problems. The new measure was introduced by Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Reps. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Penn.

Airport Security Under Scrutiny After Flight Attendant Attack

The recent attack on a flight attendant by a passenger with a history of mental illness has raised questions about airport security and the effectiveness of no-fly lists. While legislation has been proposed to create a new no-fly list for those charged or fined for interfering with airline crews, some groups have opposed it, citing concerns about transparency and fairness. Experts say that determining who should be on such a list would be controversial and that having a mental health challenge is not necessarily a predictor of violent behavior. Instead, the incident highlights the need for better care for mentally ill individuals.
