In 2024, AI technology uncovered 303 new geoglyphs in the Nazca Desert, nearly doubling the known figures and providing new insights into this ancient UNESCO World Heritage site, which was created by the Nazca culture between 200 BCE and 600 CE.
Researchers have used artificial intelligence to discover three previously unknown Nazca Lines in Peru, including a pair of legs spanning over 250 feet, a 62-foot-wide fish, and a 56-foot-wide bird. The deep-learning system used to identify these geoglyphs works 21 times faster than a human, revealing these hidden gems from aerial photographs of the desert. The researchers have been searching for Nazca geoglyphs since 2004 and have discovered over 150 new Nazca Lines in recent years.
