Rare Aubrite Asteroid Identified Near Berlin
The meteorites that fell near Berlin on January 21, 2024, have been officially classified as a rare type called "aubrites." These meteorites belong to the small asteroid 2024 BX1 and were difficult to find due to their resemblance to Earth rocks from a distance. They have a mostly translucent glass crust and are composed mainly of magnesium silicates enstatite and forsterite. This discovery underscores the importance of meteorite collections for research, as there is only material from eleven other observed falls of this type in meteorite collections worldwide.
