Ecuador's President Dissolves National Assembly and Announces He Won't Seek Reelection.

Ecuador's president Guillermo Lasso has said he has no plans to run in the upcoming elections after dissolving the National Assembly and triggering new elections this year. Lasso plans to use his last months as president to advance executive orders focused on security, health, education and infrastructure. He invoked a constitutional measure called muerte cruzada, which allows him to rule by decree for up to six months. Lasso rejects the charges against him as politically motivated and is the first Ecuadoran president to invoke muerte cruzada. The electoral court said it would hold early legislative and presidential elections as soon as Aug. 20, with a potential runoff presidential election in October.

Ecuador's President Dissolves Congress to Avoid Impeachment.

Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso dissolved the country's legislature and moved to rule by decree, avoiding impeachment over embezzlement accusations. Lasso is applying a constitutional mechanism known as a muerte cruzada, allowing him to shut down the legislature while setting him on a path to give up office in about six months. The move could be the beginning of the end for one of the few remaining conservative heads of government in South America and is set to thrust the country into a period of political turmoil.

Ecuadoran President Lasso Faces Impeachment Proceedings.

Lawmakers in Ecuador have voted to open an impeachment trial against President Guillermo Lasso, who is accused of embezzlement. Lasso is the first president to be sent to such proceedings since the country’s return to democracy in 1979. He has denied wrongdoing, and a legislative oversight commission has recommended against impeachment. Lasso’s trial is expected to open on May 20. If he lacks the votes to stay in office, he will call for a “muerte cruzada” — “crossed death” — a constitutional mechanism that allows him to dissolve the assembly and bring a new presidential election within six months.
