Turkey Vetoes Passage of UK Minehunters Destined for Ukraine
Turkey has refused passage to two British minehunter ships donated to Ukraine, citing the 1936 Montreux Convention which allows Turkey to restrict naval transit through its straits during wartime. This decision is in line with Turkey's previous invocation of the convention following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, aiming to prevent escalation in the Black Sea region. Turkey maintains balanced relations with both Ukraine and Russia amidst the ongoing conflict.
