Xcel Energy addresses radioactive leak at Monticello nuclear plant.

Xcel Energy is cleaning up a tritium leak at its Monticello nuclear generating plant in Minnesota. The leak, which was reported in November, involved 400,000 gallons of water contaminated with tritium leaking from a water pipe between two buildings. The leak has since been stopped and contained, with no risk to public health or safety. Xcel Energy has recovered 25% of the tritium released and plans to power down the plant next month to remove and repair the broken pipe. Tritium is a radioactive form of hydrogen and a byproduct of nuclear power plants' electricity production.

Monticello Nuclear Plant Contaminated Water Leak Contained and Cleaned Up by Xcel Energy

Xcel Energy is cleaning up a leak at the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant after 400,000 gallons of water contaminated with radioactive tritium leaked from pipes at the plant. The leak was reported in late November 2022 after Xcel Energy found unusual results while conducting routine groundwater testing. The contaminated water has not reached the Mississippi River or contaminated drinking water sources, and there is no evidence at this time to indicate a risk to any drinking water wells in the vicinity of the plant. Xcel Energy is monitoring groundwater from over two dozen wells on-site and considering options to store the recovered contaminated water.
