Xcel Energy addresses radioactive leak at Monticello nuclear plant.
Xcel Energy is cleaning up a tritium leak at its Monticello nuclear generating plant in Minnesota. The leak, which was reported in November, involved 400,000 gallons of water contaminated with tritium leaking from a water pipe between two buildings. The leak has since been stopped and contained, with no risk to public health or safety. Xcel Energy has recovered 25% of the tritium released and plans to power down the plant next month to remove and repair the broken pipe. Tritium is a radioactive form of hydrogen and a byproduct of nuclear power plants' electricity production.
