Leaked recording implicates UAE in attempted coup in Sudan.

A leaked audio recording attributed to the former head of Sudanese intelligence, Salah Gosh, accuses the United Arab Emirates of being behind recent events in Sudan, including an attempted coup. The recording alleges that the UAE established a 'command centre' in Abu Dhabi with the aim of replacing the army with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. The plan involved striking the army, announcing a government recognised by sponsoring countries and international institutions, and taking over key locations. However, the plan was ultimately halted and a ceasefire was agreed upon.

International Pressure Mounts to End Sudan's Ongoing Conflict

At least 185 people have been killed and 1,800 injured in three days of fighting between rival factions in Sudan, with heavy clashes reported in the capital Khartoum and other cities. The power struggle is between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the armed forces commander, and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group. The fighting broke out over disagreements about the planned integration of the RSF into the regular army. The crisis has been ongoing since the 2021 coup. Emergency services have been stopped at hospitals, creating a humanitarian crisis. The Sudanese army has captured a strategic RSF base in Port Sudan.

The Power Struggle Within Sudan's Military: Meet the Key Players

Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, is a former warlord and deputy head of state in Sudan. He rose to power through the Janjaweed militia and caught the eye of former dictator Omar al-Bashir. Hemedti formed the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in 2013, which has been accused of committing atrocities against protesters. He is now in a power struggle with army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, with both sides accusing the other of mobilizing forces. Many Sudanese view Hemedti as an existential threat to the country's democratic transition and viability as a state.

Unveiling the Rise of Sudan's Hemedti to Power.

General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as "Hemedti", is the leader of Sudan's powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He rose to prominence as the deputy leader of a transitional council after former strongman Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in 2019. Despite being a longtime al-Bashir ally, Dagalo took part in overthrowing the president when the 2019 uprising broke out. His RSF forces killed more than 100 people at a protest camp in 2019 outside the Ministry of Defence. Dagalo has cracked down hard on dissenters and has forged powerful ties both in the region and internationally. The latest violence broke out after the army, the RSF, and Sudan's civilian pro-democracy forces reached an agreement in December that plotted out the path to civilian rule.
