OpenAI Aligns With Anthropic Over Pentagon AI Rules, Seeks Classified Deal

OpenAI says it shares Anthropic's red lines for Pentagon use of AI—no mass surveillance or autonomous weapons and humans in the loop—while pursuing a deal to run ChatGPT in classified military environments under guardrails such as cloud-only confinement, ongoing security monitoring, and clearance-backed oversight. China Restricts Drone Exports Amid US Tech Tensions and Military Concerns

China has imposed restrictions on the export of long-range civilian drones, citing concerns about their potential conversion for military use and their alleged involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The export controls, effective from Tuesday, aim to prevent the use of drones for non-peaceful purposes. The restrictions will apply to drones that can fly beyond the natural sight distance of operators, stay aloft for more than 30 minutes, have attachments that can throw objects, and weigh over 7 kilograms. China, a leading developer and exporter of drones, has accused the US and Western media of spreading false information about Chinese drone exports.

Chinese-made DJI commercial drones, costing around $2,000 or less, are being used by both Ukrainian and Russian troops in the ongoing war in Ukraine. The drones are easy to fly, widely available online and in electronics stores, and are popular worldwide among civilians who fly drones for fun. The drones are being modified to carry small explosives and grenades, and are used for reconnaissance and directing artillery fire. DJI announced in April 2022 that it would stop selling drones to Ukraine or Russia because they were not intended to be used for military activities.
