Oaxaca Unveils 1,400-Year-Old Zapotec Tomb With Owl Guardian and Vivid Murals
Mexican archaeologists have unearthed a Zapotec tomb in San Pablo Huitzo, Oaxaca, dating to about 600 CE. The site features an owl sculpture guarding the entrance and a mural-filled chamber depicting a ceremonial procession with copal, along with potential tomb guardians. An INAH team is stabilizing the fragile murals as roots, insects, and shifting conditions threaten the site, a discovery President Claudia Sheinbaum calls one of the most important archaeological finds in years.
