Violence Escalates: Second Mexican Mayoral Candidate Killed Days Before Election
A mayoral candidate, Alfredo Cabrera, was fatally shot during a campaign rally in southern Mexico, marking the second such killing in days ahead of the general election. The incident is part of a broader pattern of violence against candidates, with at least 22 murders reported since September 2023. Guerrero governor Evelyn Salgado condemned the act and called for justice, while the opposition criticized the government's efforts to ensure candidate safety. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has deployed over 27,000 troops to secure the elections.
