"MASN and Comcast Agreement Moves Orioles Games to Pricier Cable Tier"

MASN and Comcast have reached an agreement to move MASN and MASN2 to a more expensive cable tier, Ultimate TV, which will cost Popular TV subscribers an additional $20 a month to watch Orioles and Nationals games. Current Popular TV subscribers who do not wish to subscribe to MASN will see a slight decrease in their cable bill. The transition is expected to take place on Tuesday, and Comcast is offering a six-month promotional deal for Popular TV subscribers who want to transition to Ultimate TV. There is no direct-to-consumer option to watch MASN, and the transition is similar to moves made by Comcast in other markets.

Orioles' Announcer Drama Casts Shadow on Team's Image

The Baltimore Orioles' recent success on the field has been overshadowed by a controversy surrounding broadcaster Kevin Brown, who was absent from the booth for two weeks due to comments he made about the team's previous struggles. The comments, which were based on factual information provided in the team's game notes, apparently rubbed team owner John Angelos the wrong way. This incident highlights a pattern of questionable decisions by Angelos, including the dismissal of other broadcasters and a lack of transparency. Brown is expected to return to the broadcast booth soon, but the incident raises concerns about job security and the potential for misinterpretation of future comments.

Nationals Prevail in MASN Dispute with Orioles in Appellate Court

The New York Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of the Washington Nationals in their dispute with the Baltimore Orioles over local broadcasting fees. The two teams jointly own the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), which carries local broadcasting rights for both clubs. The appellate court found the lower court had overstepped its authority in awarding the $105MM in past damages. The organizations have to return to the table to sort out the extent and payment of MASN’s overdue rights fees pursuant to a separate provision of their contract.

Court confirms Nationals' rights in MASN financial dispute.

The New York State Court of Appeals has confirmed the fair market value of the Washington Nationals’ television rights, which will help the team collect tens of millions of dollars in missing rights fees. The court found that the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network, controlled by the Baltimore Orioles, has no right to take the dispute over $100m in missing rights fees payments from 2012 to 2016 to an independent arbitrator. The sides must continue negotiating over the amount to be paid to the Nationals.

New York court rules against MASN and Orioles in Nationals TV rights dispute.

New York's highest court ruled against MASN in the long-standing TV rights fee case between the Orioles and the Nationals. MASN and the Orioles have lost their battle to get a court to agree that an MLB panel will be inherently biased against them in deciding on TV rights fees for the Nationals. The court stated that a reasonable person could conclude that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred's public statements did not establish evident partiality because the RSDC, not Manfred, made the final decision. The practical effect of the decision is probably not much, as there has been about $105 million held in escrow in case of this possibility for a number of years now.
