Daniel Penny Pleads Not Guilty in Subway Chokehold Death Case
Daniel Penny, a Marine veteran, pleaded not guilty to a manslaughter charge in the killing of a homeless man, Jordan Neely, on a New York City subway train. The incident, which occurred in May, highlighted the city's challenges with homelessness, mental health, and violence in its subways. Penny was indicted by a grand jury and also faces a charge of criminally negligent homicide. Witnesses reported that Neely was using threatening language but had not physically confronted anyone before Penny placed him in a chokehold, resulting in his death. The medical examiner ruled that the chokehold caused Neely's death, but it does not automatically make Penny criminally responsible.
