
Unseen Nutrient Discharge Threatens Great Barrier Reef
Scientists have discovered that previously unquantified nitrogen and phosphorous, which are having a profound environmental impact on the Great Barrier Reef, are originating from submarine groundwater discharge rather than river inputs. The study highlights the need for a strategic shift in management approaches to safeguard the reef from the effects of excess nutrients, as groundwater discharge was found to be 10-15 times greater than river inputs. This new understanding emphasizes the importance of long-term research and strategies to protect the reef for future generations.
