Researchers have challenged the long-held belief that enzymatic actions of the enzyme CaMKII are required for long-term potentiation (LTP), a key process in learning and memory. Instead, they discovered that LTP requires the structural functions of CaMKII. This breakthrough opens the possibility of developing a new class of CaMKII inhibitors that can protect against the effects of Alzheimer's disease without impairing memory and learning. The researchers are currently testing these inhibitors for their therapeutic potential in human Alzheimer's treatment.
