"Magnetic Interference: The Risks of Using Magnets to Find Meteorites"
Scientists are warning meteorite hunters to stop using magnets to verify their finds as even weak magnets can destroy valuable information about the magnetic field of its parent body and the history of our solar system. A new study suggests using a low-field susceptibility meter that can measure a specimen's susceptibility to magnetism without erasing the critical Martian magnetic field data. These devices, however, are expensive, with most going for thousands of dollars.
