Germany is deploying its most advanced Leopard 2A8 tanks with a new brigade to Lithuania, marking its first major permanent military deployment abroad since WWII, as a deterrent against Russia and in response to lessons learned from the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing modern armor and combined maneuver warfare capabilities.
Germany plans to acquire 18 Leopard 2A8 tanks to replace the previously donated Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine, with an option for an additional 105 Leopard 2A8 tanks. The purchase aligns with the Bundeswehr's projected needs and will boost its capabilities considerably. The Leopard 2A8 boasts several upgrades, including an innovative armor package, superior situational awareness and communication systems, and a revamped fire control system. The tank will be armored with cutting-edge, 3rd-generation composite multilayer armor throughout its frame and incorporate the Rafael Trophy Active Protection System.
