Unleashing the Methane Monster: The Silent Menace of Thawing Permafrost

Thawing permafrost, which covers 22% of the Earth's land surface, poses significant risks to the climate. Permafrost contains vast stores of CO₂ and methane, potent greenhouse gases, as well as bacteria, microbes, and mercury. If released, these gases could have catastrophic implications for global warming. The extent of CO₂ and methane release is uncertain, but it is estimated to be twice the amount currently in the atmosphere. Thawing permafrost is occurring faster than expected, with potential consequences for Alpine regions, including land instability and increased landslides.
