Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed an AI system called "Coscientist" that combines three specialized instances of large language models (LLMs) to teach itself chemistry. The system includes a web searcher, a documentation searcher, and a planner, each with distinct capabilities. Coscientist demonstrated the ability to synthesize chemicals, control lab equipment, and optimize reactions. While the structure of Coscientist resembles how brains operate, concerns remain about regulating its capabilities to prevent the synthesis of dangerous substances.
