UAW Workers Unanimously Ratify New Labor Contracts with Detroit Automakers

Members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union have ratified new labor contracts with Ford and Stellantis, with support from around 68% and nearly 70% of UAW workers respectively. The contracts include a 25% increase in base wages, cost-of-living adjustments, bonuses, and pay raises. They also improve conditions for temporary employees and reduce the time needed to reach the top pay rate. The ratification comes after workers at General Motors also voted to approve their contract. The Big Three automakers are now assessing the financial impact of the new contracts as they continue their push into electric vehicles. Stellantis has offered voluntary buyouts to about half of its salaried employees, while the UAW is focusing on organizing efforts at non-union auto factories.

Impending Writers Strike Threatens Hollywood's Economy and Productions.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has informed its members that they must cross the picket line if the Writers Guild of America (WGA) goes on strike, or they could face employer repercussions. The DGA's contract requires that it will not call or engage in any strike, slow-down or stoppage of work affecting motion picture production. The WGA could call a strike as soon as May 1, but a work stoppage still isn't guaranteed and depends on the outcome of current negotiations with studios and streamers. The DGA is currently scheduled to enter into negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on May 10.

NYC Mayor Adams Orders Additional Budget Cuts Amid Uncertainty.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has directed nearly every city agency, including the Police Department, to cut their budgets by 4% for the coming fiscal year, which begins in July. Only the Department of Education and the City University of New York will be subject to smaller cuts of 3%. The budget cuts called for on Tuesday are the third round of reductions that Mr. Adams has asked his commissioners to carry out, and they are among the largest cuts he has demanded. The delivery of municipal services in many areas of the city has suffered over the past year and a half, and Mr. Adams has raised the specter of cutting critical municipal services in response to what his budget director described as worsening economic conditions.

Fain elected as new UAW president, promises reform and aggressive negotiations.

Shawn Fain narrowly defeats incumbent Ray Curry to become the new president of the United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union. Fain has vowed to take a tough line with Detroit's Big Three automakers as labor contracts expire in September. He aims to reform the UAW, which he believes has been controlled by leadership with a top-down, company union philosophy. The UAW is working to organize new battery plants and members worry that shifting to electric vehicles will cost jobs. Fain's election marks a historic opportunity to get back to setting the standard across all sectors.
