Mike Johnston elected as Denver's new mayor amidst housing crisis and rapid growth.
Mike Johnston, a former Oregon state senator, has been elected as the new mayor of Denver, replacing Michael Hancock, who was term-limited. Johnston won the runoff election with 54.05% of the vote, defeating opponent Kelly Brough. Denver is facing out-of-control housing costs, increased homelessness, rising gentrification, the highest crime rate in decades, and a surge in opioid overdoses. Johnston and Brough both campaigned on enforcing a ban on growing homeless encampments. Johnston will helm a rapidly growing city that has become the tech and business hub of the Mountain West.
