Audubon Society Stands Firm on Name Despite Controversy Over Ties to Slavery
The National Audubon Society's board of directors rejected the idea of changing its name, despite criticism over its association with John James Audubon, who owned and sold enslaved people. The decision has led to resignations and plans from local groups to rename themselves. The organization cited its work on climate change and the fact that its name has come to represent more than one person as reasons for keeping the name. However, at least five groups have dropped the Audubon name or are in the process of doing so.
