"Breakthrough ALS Treatment Strategy Shows Promise in Halting Disease Progression"
Northeastern University scientist Jeffrey Agar has developed a potential breakthrough treatment for ALS, focusing on preventing the progression of the disease by targeting the mutation of the SOD1 protein. The treatment, which uses a small molecule linker to prevent the separation of the SOD1 protein, has shown promising results in mice, rats, and dogs, and is moving towards final testing for clinical trials. With this development, there is hope for halting the progression of ALS in about half of the cases in the U.S., potentially allowing patients to live longer and maintain their motor functions.
