Sweden Contemplates Donating Fighter Jets to Ukraine: Report

The Swedish government is reportedly considering donating JAS 39 Gripen fighters to Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia's invasion. The government may ask the armed forces about the feasibility of transferring an unspecified number of Gripens to Ukraine. However, the implementation of any transfer would take time, with the earliest possible deployment being the summer of 2024. The Gripens to be donated would be of the JAS 39C/D version. While there are obstacles to overcome, such as concerns about Sweden's defense capabilities and U.S. export controls, the potential transfer could provide Ukraine with a significant advantage in its conflict with Russia.

Ukraine's F-16 Request Gains Momentum Amidst Growing Interest in Swedish Gripens

Ukraine has requested F-16 fighter jets from Western countries to counter Russia's technological edge in the air war. However, Ukrainian officials are also interested in acquiring Sweden's JAS 39 Gripen, which experts believe would be well-suited for Ukraine's needs. The Gripen has advanced capabilities, including supersonic speeds, a range of air-to-air missiles, and a pilot-friendly design. It is also cost-effective to operate and has a short-takeoff-and-landing capability. Despite its reputation, the Gripen has lost previous competitions to the F-35. Ukraine hopes to showcase the Gripen's combat experience against the Russian Air Force to secure its delivery, but finding available aircraft may prove challenging.

Sweden to Train Ukrainian Fighter Pilots on JAS-39 Gripen Jets in $24 Million Support Package.

Sweden has announced plans to provide training to Ukrainian pilots and ground personnel on the operation and maintenance of JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets, in response to Ukraine's desire for an "operational evaluation" of the type. The Swedish government has also pledged to contribute millions of dollars to the British fund International Fund for Ukraine and the NATO Ukraine Comprehensive Assistance Package Trust Fund to help finance the purchase of additional weapon systems and other materiel. The Gripen plans are by far the most significant part of this announcement, as Ukraine has been very outspoken in their desire to get fleets of more modern Western combat jets.
