Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been acquitted by the Islamabad High Court in the Avenfield reference case, providing a major relief for his political party, the PML-N. Sharif had been convicted and sentenced to jail in both the Avenfield and Al-Azizia corruption references, but his sentence in the latter case was suspended on medical grounds in 2019. After returning from exile in the UK, Sharif filed applications for the restoration of his appeals against his convictions.

Imran Khan's Jail Trial Declared Null and Void by Pakistan's Top Court

The Islamabad High Court has declared the jail trial of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in the cipher case as "null and void," nullifying the August 29 notification. The court stated that a jail trial can only be conducted in exceptional circumstances and in accordance with the procedure provided by law. The court also declared that all notifications issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice regarding the jail trial are of no legal effect. Imran Khan is currently detained in Adiala jail in Rawalpindi on judicial remand.

Imran Khan's Legal Troubles: From Toshakhana to Arrest in Lahore

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has set aside a trial court verdict declaring the Toshakhana reference filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the PTI chairman as maintainable for criminal proceedings. The IHC Chief Justice ordered the trial court to re-hear the case and rejected the PTI chief's appeal to transfer the case to another court. The IHC also directed the Federal Investigation Agency to inquire into alleged posts on the session judge's Facebook account. The Supreme Court dismissed Imran Khan's plea against trial proceedings pertaining to the Toshakhana complaint after he withdrew his petition.
