Estonia and Latvia are in negotiations to purchase the medium-range IRIS-T SLM defense system from German manufacturer Diehl Defence. The system is designed to protect against air attacks and has an operational range of 40 kilometers. The purchase would cost hundreds of millions of euros and could become operational in 2025.
Western allies have sent a range of air defense systems to Ukraine since the Russian invasion last year to help shore up Kyiv’s defenses. The systems form a grab bag of different capabilities and technologies that are vital in defending the skies from missiles, fighter jets and Iranian-made drones that have terrorized the capital. The Patriot missile system, NASAMS, IRIS-T, Hawk, and gun trucks are among the air defense systems that Ukraine now has.
