Australia's Historic Referendum: Indigenous Voice and the Path to Reconciliation
Australians are voting in a historic referendum on Indigenous recognition and representation, with the proposal stemming from the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The referendum asks voters if they want to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advisory body, known as the Voice, in the constitution to recognize them as the nation's First Peoples. The Voice would advise the government on laws and policies affecting Indigenous communities. However, opinion polls have shown declining support for the proposal in recent months. In order for the reform to pass, a national majority of voters must vote Yes, along with a majority of voters in four of Australia's six states.
