India has signed a comprehensive free trade agreement with the UK, providing duty-free access for most exports and exempting Indian professionals in the UK from social security tax for three years, while also progressing with other FTAs and criticizing past trade deals, amid ongoing US-India trade tensions.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan, to discuss a range of subjects including the India-UK free trade agreement, innovation, science, and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. The British High Commission in India described the meeting as "a strong friendship." The two leaders reviewed their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including taking stock of progress in India-UK FTA negotiations. PM Modi is currently in Japan to participate in the G7 summit, where he also visited the Peace Memorial Museum and engaged in bilateral meetings with various world leaders.
