Unusual Brain Connectivity Patterns Found in Kids with ADHD, NIH Study Reveals

A new NIH study has found atypical connections in the brains of children with ADHD, debunking the myth of "bad parenting" causing the condition. The study revealed increased connectivity between deep brain structures and the frontal cortex in young brains with ADHD, suggesting too little synaptic pruning occurring in those pathways. This increased understanding of specific brain areas involved in ADHD symptoms could lead to more effective treatments in the future.

Cracking the Code: Identifying ADHD through Distraction Scores

Researchers have identified a new measure called the "d factor" that represents a person's general distractibility and its potential connection to ADHD. By analyzing over 1,000 participants' responses on distraction tendencies, three core factors emerged: external distraction, unwanted intrusive thoughts, and mind-wandering. These factors converged into the "d factor", which showed strong statistical ties with ADHD symptoms and hyperfocus. This insight could lead to a better understanding of distractibility and ADHD.
