A recent study by international scientists found that the lethal heatwave in West Africa earlier this month, which led to temperatures over 110 degrees Fahrenheit and likely killed hundreds or thousands of people, was a result of human-induced climate change. The extreme temperatures, described as a once-in-200-year event, were exacerbated by power shortages, leaving many without access to cooling systems. The climate crisis has been particularly deadly in the Sahel region, compounding challenges for pastoralists and fueling mass migration and insurgencies. The report warns that similar extreme weather events will continue with future warming of the planet.
