Mediated efforts to ease tensions between Sudan's military and paramilitary forces.

The head of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemeti, has expressed his willingness to meet with the army chief and leader of the ruling council to ease military tensions. The situation escalated after the deployment of some RSF personnel near a major military airport in the northern city of Merowe on Wednesday, prompting the army to make a statement saying the moves were illegal. Despite positive messages coming from the rival camps, the situation in Merowe remained the same. The RSF and the army remain at odds over who would be the commander-in-chief of the military during a multiyear integration period.

Tensions rise in Sudan as military and paramilitary forces clash.

The Sudanese army has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group, of mobilising its forces in Khartoum and other cities, raising the prospect of confrontation with the armed forces. The RSF, accused of widespread human rights abuses, operates under a special law and has its own chain of command. Tensions between the army and RSF have been rising for months over the integration of the RSF into the military. Political parties have warned against developments that could lead to political turmoil and civil war.
