Pandemic Intensifies Fear of Childbirth in Women, Study Shows.
A new survey finds that tokophobia, a pathological fear of childbirth, may be very common in the United States, particularly among Black women and in disadvantaged communities. The survey of nearly 1,800 American women found that in the early days of the pandemic, 62% of pregnant respondents reported high levels of fear and worry about childbirth. Women with tokophobia were almost twice as likely to have a preterm birth, and fear of childbirth might be “an underappreciated contributor to health inequity,” according to the study's lead author.
