NASA has paused its plans to acquire lunar communication ground stations due to uncertain budgets, aiming to support lunar missions and ease the burden on the Deep Space Network.
Palantir's USG subsidiary has been awarded a $178.4 million contract by the Army for the next phase of its TITAN ground station program, which aims to provide soldiers with advanced data fusion and deep-sensing capabilities through artificial intelligence. The program will deliver 10 prototypes, including five "basic" and five "advanced" variants of the ground station, integrating various data sources to help commanders make sense of complex battlefields. The system is designed to incorporate AI and software workflows to enhance soldiers' decision-making, with the goal of increasing capability, reducing complexity, and allowing for quicker operations on the battlefield.
Former Disney star Bridgit Mendler, now CEO of startup Northwood Space, is launching a satellite data venture focused on mass producing ground stations to improve the transfer of data to and from space. Backed by major VCs including Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz, the company aims to provide fast and flexible deployment of ground stations, targeting services for satellites in low Earth orbit initially. The startup plans to address the bottleneck in shared ground stations and offer a similar experience to renting server capacity from cloud providers like Amazon Web Services or Microsoft's Azure.
