As the role of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the Ukraine war has expanded, attention is now turning to ground drones, with Ukrainian engineers developing unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) that carry weapons and explosives or conduct reconnaissance. Russia is also investing in UGVs, and Ukraine aims to counter that by encouraging innovation among small enterprises. The low cost and potential to save lives make UGVs an attractive option. However, the impact of combat UGVs has been limited so far, and the ultimate goal is to have these systems function autonomously in battle.
