Gregory Gourdet's Kann restaurant in Portland won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant. Gourdet and his team celebrated with a custom suit, catering, and an after-after party with fried-chicken sandwiches and dancing until 4 a.m. Gourdet says winning means there's even more pressure to maintain the high standards of the restaurant, which has already won numerous awards.
Portland restaurants Kann and Berlu won awards at the 2023 James Beard Foundation Awards, with Kann taking home Best New Restaurant and Berlu's Vince Nguyen winning Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific. Kann, which features wood-fired Haitian cuisine, is the first Portland restaurant to win Best New Restaurant in the history of the awards. Chef Gregory Gourdet, who opened Kann, has previously been recognized by the James Beard Foundation. Chef Vince Nguyen serves a contemporary Vietnamese tasting menu at Berlu, which he opened in 2019.
