Germany's Climate Efforts Fall Short of Targets, Experts Warn
Germany is likely to miss its goal of cutting greenhouse emissions by 65% by 2030, which casts doubt on its target of achieving net zero by 2045, according to reports by government climate advisers and the Federal Environment Agency. The reports highlight that the buildings and transport sectors are failing to implement necessary measures to meet the targets. The government's current policies are projected to achieve only 82% to 86% of the targeted emissions cuts compared to 1990. The transport sector, which accounts for two-thirds of the remaining emissions, is particularly problematic. Non-profit group Deutsche Umwelthilfe has called for an emergency climate program, including measures such as enforcing a speed limit on motorways and reducing environmentally harmful subsidies.
