Bison Restoration Efforts Strengthened by Tribal Partnerships and Government Investment

Several tribes from across the Great Plains have received dozens of bison from a mountain park outside Denver, as Native Americans seek to reclaim stewardship over animals their ancestors lived alongside for millennia. The transfer of bison to tribal lands is part of a wider effort to expand the number of large herds on Native American lands, with 82 tribes now having more than 20,000 bison. The animals were nearly wiped out two centuries ago, devastating Native American tribes across the continent that relied on bison and their parts for food, clothing and shelter.
