Spotify Pulls Plug on Popular Podcasts 'Heavyweight' and 'Stolen'

Spotify is canceling two of its podcasts, Heavyweight and Stolen, as the platform reduces its investment in the podcast space. The podcasts, produced by Spotify's Gimlet Media, will finish their seasons on Spotify before being able to shop their shows elsewhere. The cancellation is unrelated to the recent layoffs at Spotify. Heavyweight, currently in its eighth season, helps guests work through difficult moments from their past, while Stolen, which has completed two seasons, explores stories about Indigenous people.

Spotify Podcast Division to Lay Off 200 Employees, Including Gimlet and Parcast Workers

Spotify plans to lay off about 200 employees, including workers at podcast studios Gimlet Media and Parcast, as part of a "strategic realignment" of its podcast division. The move comes as media companies cut podcast jobs and curb budgets after years of investment in the industry. Gimlet and Parcast will be absorbed into Spotify Studios, and the two studios, along with The Ringer, will continue to make new shows and produce podcasts. The layoffs are part of an effort to provide more options for podcast creators, according to Sahar Elhabashi, the head of podcasts at Spotify.

Spotify cuts 200 jobs in podcast division reorganization.

Spotify has cut 200 jobs, mostly in its podcast division, as it pivots towards creator-focused podcasting. The layoffs amount to about a 2% cut to the company's workforce. Parcast and Gimlet Media, two podcast studios that Spotify acquired in 2019, will be combined into an operation called Spotify Studios. The move comes after Spotify last year laid off staff as it canceled 11 shows made by Gimlet and Parcast, including "How to Save a Planet," a popular climate change podcast. The number of new podcasts dropped by nearly 77% from 2020 to 2022, according to Listen Notes, a podcast database.
