The vaquita, the world's most endangered marine mammal, is still hanging on with at least 10 individuals remaining in the Gulf of California, according to a new scientific survey. The species has been driven to the brink of extinction by drowning in gill nets, but new conservation measures, including the use of concrete blocks to entangle the nets, have led to a drop of over 90% in gillnetting in the zero-tolerance area. However, more action is needed to save the species, including transitioning local economies that rely on gill nets to new gear.
