Scientists from the University of Lisbon warn that the Atlantic Ocean may be swallowed up by a chain of colliding tectonic plates known as the "Ring of Fire." The Gibraltar Trench, located beneath the Gibraltar Strait, is expanding westward, potentially leading to the disappearance of the Atlantic Ocean over the next 20 million years. This process could also trigger the formation of a new Atlantic subduction zone, causing continents to move closer and resulting in increased seismic activity.
