"Giant Sequoias Thriving and Rapidly Growing in UK Landscape"
A new study led by UCL researchers and colleagues at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, reveals that giant sequoia trees, introduced to the UK 160 years ago, are well adapted to the UK climate and capable of capturing significant amounts of carbon. With an estimated half a million redwoods in the UK and more being planted, the study provides the first analysis of their growth rate and resilience in the UK. While the trees are effective at sequestering carbon, the researchers emphasize the need for long-term commitment and consideration of their ability to thrive in the UK's changing climate.
