Meta's AI MusicGen: Open-Source Music Generator Trained on 20,000 Hours of Licensed Music.

Meta has released an open-source AI-powered music generator called MusicGen, which can turn a text description into about 12 seconds of audio. MusicGen was trained on 20,000 hours of music, including 10,000 licensed music tracks and 390,000 instrument-only tracks from Shutterstock and Pond5. MusicGen can also be "steered" with reference audio. While generative music is improving, there are still major ethical and legal issues to be ironed out, including copyright concerns.

Google's AI-powered text-to-music tool now available to the public

Google has released MusicLM, an experimental AI tool that can turn text descriptions into music. Users can specify instruments and the "vibe, mood, or emotion" they're aiming for, as they refine their MusicLM-generated creations. However, the tool poses ethical challenges, including a tendency to incorporate copyrighted material from training data into the generated songs. Several lawsuits making their way through the courts will likely have a bearing on music-generating AI, including one pertaining to the rights of artists whose work is used to train AI systems without their knowledge or consent.
