An Idaho prison gang member and an accomplice fled from a hospital in Boise after an ambush in which three corrections officers were shot, leading to a manhunt. The two men, Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour, were caught without incident after a brief vehicle pursuit in the Twin Falls area. Authorities are investigating whether the men are connected to separate homicides of two men in Nez Perce County and Clearwater County in Idaho.
California Governor Gavin Newsom overruled a state parole board's decision to release Derek Eugene Pettis, a gang member who murdered a minister and shot a deputy in 1994. Pettis, who was granted "youthful offender" parole, had a history of violence and substance abuse. Newsom's decision came after outrage and condemnation from prosecutors and deputies, with the governor noting that Pettis poses an unreasonable danger to society if released. Pettis will have another chance to go before the parole board in 18 months, and the governor has yet to make a decision on the pending release of another convicted murderer.
Phoenix police have connected a suspect, 21-year-old Leonardo Santiago, to a second murder after he was arrested for the murder of a man at a Phoenix park. Santiago, a known gang member, allegedly admitted his involvement in the death of 20-year-old Osvaldo Hernandez Castillo, who was found shot in a car earlier this year. The police linked Santiago to the second murder through digital evidence but did not provide further details. A Columbia police officer was injured and a suspect, identified as a gang member on probation, was taken into custody after reports of shots fired in Columbia, South Carolina. The suspect, who was shot but is expected to recover, fired at the officer as soon as he stepped out of his car. San Francisco police are searching for Javier Campos as a person of interest in the Friday night mass shooting in the Mission District that left nine people injured. Johnson urged the team and the league to get Morant the necessary help he needs.
