Fort Benning renamed to Fort Moore.

The U.S. Army's Fort Benning has been renamed Fort Moore in honor of Hal Moore, the commander of American troops in the 1965 battle of Ia Drang Valley, and his wife Julie Moore, who fought to change the way the military notified families of the dead. Julie Moore is now the first Army spouse to have a base named after her.

Army Bases Shed Confederate Names in Favor of New Honors

The Army has renamed five of its nine bases named after men who fought against its own soldiers during the Civil War, with four more awaiting their ceremonies. The latest renaming ceremony saw Georgia's Fort Benning renamed Fort Moore in honor of retired Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and his wife Julia, who rose to prominence after Moore commanded the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry in Vietnam during the 1965 Battle of Ia Drang. The Moores are buried at the post, surrounded by the 7th Cav soldiers who died at Landing Zone X-Ray.

The base’s redesignation comes after Fort Hood was renamed Fort Cavazos on Tuesday and Fort Lee was renamed Fort Gregg-Adams last month to similarly remove associations with their original Confederate namesakes.

Henry L. Benning, who was an outspoken anti-Lincoln secessionist. The name change is part of a broader effort by the US military to confront racial injustice. Other bases around the country, including Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, and Fort Bragg, have either recently been renamed or are scheduled to be in the near future.
